It was Tom Hedges’ contact in the produce export market that “planted the seeds” for Hedges Cellars. Tom was asked to produce a Washington State table wine for sale in Sweden. A winery was born. The first two vintages (1987 and 1988) of Hedges Cellars Cabernet-Merlot were sold exclusively in Sweden. Today, four different wines including the 1997 vintage of Cabernet-Merlot are sold in 45 states and 15 foreign countries. Hedges Cellars is being hailed as one of the country's “Great Red Meritage Producers.”

Tom Hedges led a career in International Marketing focusing on food commodities. He was employed by Castle & Cooke foods from 1976-1982 heading up offices in Buenos Aires, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Vancouver, Canada. Next, he worked for Pandol Bros., a small dutch trading company in Seattle, importing Chilean produce and exporting fruit to the Far East and India. In 1984 Tom served as President and CEO of McCain Produce Co. in New Brunswick, Canada farming potatoes for export.

Tom met his French wife, Anne-Marie, in Guadalajara, Mexico at the Autonoma University of Guadalajara in 1975. Together they have raised two children.

From an early age Anne-Marie had a sense for adventure. Growing up with stories about the second world war, tales of the French resistance and visits from a British soldier saved by her grandfather from being captured by the enemy, it is no wonder that she wanted to see the world.

After high school, she attended college in England, Germany and Mexico. It was in Mexico that she met her future husband—Tom Hedges. They were married in 1976 in Champagne, France in a 12th century church. The international challenge had begun…

Accent in hand, she adapted to new food but still loved a good coq-au-vin. She tried her beer but her taste for good wine was too strong. Her grandfather, Marcel Dupont, Chevalier du Tastevin, had made sure of that.

Tom's work in international trade resulted in 11 moves for the family in 10 years—from the west coast of the United States to the east. From the west coast of Canada to the east, from warm Arizona where son Christophe was born to exotic Buenos Aires where daughter Sarah was born. Finally in 1986 Anne-Marie and Tom settled in Washington state to start Hedges Cellars.

Anne-Marie stayed behind closed doors doing bookkeeping and sales support while Tom looked for banks and customers. The transition from Finishing School in Paris in 1976 to performing an accounting role in the States was a bit of a stretch. Anne-Marie decided to go back to school and graduated with an AA degree in accounting.

Anne marie still handles some of the vineyard accounting and numerous other administrative tasks necessary for a small business owner. She is active in various non-profit organizations in the state of Washington. Anne-Marie is also a willing ambassador for Hedges Family Estate, the Red Mountain AVA and the Washington state wine industry. Her accent is still there, her french sense of style never left, her food preference is still old world but her taste for wine is distinctly American—Hedges Red Mountain. Naturellement!

Sarah Head Shot

Sarah was born in Buenos Aires and spent her early years traveling the globe with her family. In 1986 her parents settled in Seattle to start Hedges Cellars. A vineyard was planted in 1990 in Eastern Washington, Red Mountain area. In the summer Sarah, along with her brother Christophe, worked in the vineyard and in later years at the new winery built in that same location. Sarah’s love for the industry soon would turn into a career choice. She attended the University of San Diego and graduated with a degree in business and philosophy. She later attended UC Santa Barbara to study chemistry and at the same time worked for Santa Barbara winery managing the tasting room and helping with harvest. From 2003 to 2005 she worked for Preston Vineyards in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, doing wine production work

In 2005, she decided to move back home and start working for the family winery. She joined the winery full-time in 2006 as Assistant Winemaker and two years later had completed her certificate degree in enology from Washington State University and started the label Goedhart Family with her husband. After her uncle and mentor retired in 2015, Sarah became the head winemaker.

Sarah’s love for fermentation doesn’t stop with wine. She bakes rustic bread in the wood-fired oven using a starter she created with our biodynamic grapes. You can also find yogurt and sauerkraut crocks bubbling away in her kitchen. She loves to cook and garden, and she keeps it all in check with daily yoga. She also has a deep love for animals big and small. She lives in Richland, Washington with her husband, Brent, their sons Lucas and Trevor, their dogs Otto, Shadow, and Jackson, their four chickens, and a turtle named Cowboy. Her favorite wine is whichever wine she is drinking with good friends.

Kayla was born and raised in Tri Cities, WA. In high school, Kayla developed and cultivated her passion for agriculture as FFA president, an agriculture-based leadership club. She went on to lead her FFA chapter for leadership achievements to nationals.

Kayla’s ancestors derive from generations of farmers in Germany, that migrated to North Dakota, where they owned many acres of farmland. Kayla’s grandparents later settled in Benton City, where she spent much of her time growing up. Her grandparent’s innate ability to cultivate a life living off of their land would go on to inspire her desire of sustainable agriculture.

After high school, Kayla went on to pursue a degree in Psychology from Eastern Washington University. This is where she met her now husband, Erin. Following graduation, her and Erin moved to Hawaii. Kayla landed a job with a non-profit organization that rescued and redistributed excess, unsold food. During her time at this organization, she spent many weekends working with farmers helping to redistribute unsold crops.

Kayla returned to Tri-Cities in 2018 and was determined to seek out a marriage between her charity efforts and sustainable agriculture. After an introduction into wine and viticulture as the Hedges Tasting Room Manager, she went on to accept an internship at Ciel du Cheval Vineyard.

Following a season at Ciel du Cheval, Kayla accepted the position of Assistant Vineyard Manager at Hedges Family Estate. Subsequently, the regenerative farming values Hedges Family Estate holds captivated Kayla’s concentration towards organic and biodynamic farming.

In 2021, the opportunity arose to take on the Vineyard Manager position and continue her education, she happily accepted.

Outside of work, Kayla loves spending time with her husband and their pets, Edgar, the Border Collie and Kona, the tuxedo cat. As a family, they enjoy hiking, biking, and living vicariously through Rick Steves’ travel documentaries.

“We are always the student, even when we think we are the master.”

Dante was born in Monterey Park, California, but was raised in the Tri-Cities from the age of four. In his time growing up, one of the most iconic things that stood out to him was the loving culture of family and food. His family would always cook home meals; even for school lunches. When it was time to return home for dinner, it always felt like a celebration to come together and enjoy each other's time over a comforting, warm meal.

Later in life, Dante studied nutrition, in which he began to delve deeper into the rediscovery of human origins, cultures, and food ethics. In 2016, he earned his Bachelors in Anthropology from University of Washington and continued his thirst for knowledge in the food service industry.

In early 2017, Dante worked as a shop manager for the former Roasters Coffee, where he gained insights in the art of coffee, business, and local culture. Following the pandemic, he decided to pursue his passion for cooking. In October 2020, he began his new career path at the local Endive Eatery under the founder and talented Chef Ed Shoemaker, where he first learned to be a line cook and practiced the basics of the culinary scene.

In April 2022, he joined the Hedges team for the opportunity to work under the esteemed Chef Aislinn McManigal-Quintana and her husband Sebastian. Since this transition, Dante has been exploring how biodynamic farming plays an essential role in creating rich, natural wines and incorporating this philosophy into his culinary creations at Hedges estate. With his extensive background in anthropology and culinary opportunities, Dante has returned to his passion for human history and culinary traditions.

Shortly after his first year at Hedges, Dante married the love of his life, Kylee, who he met in his time as a barista. They have since bought a house, and moved to Grandview, WA. Dante enjoys varied hobbies, both inside and outside, including rock climbing, spending time with his Golden Retriever, Bjorn, and nerding out on personal projects. From discussions of philosophy to spiritual insights, Dante is eager to explore the world of multiculturalism and the many opportunities that await him in the future.
